Google has started a pilot program created by Howard West. This program is a three-month residency for junior and senior computer science majors at Howard University.
Google has a total of 72,000 employees. Out of that 72,000, 31 percent are female, and 2 percent are black. This program is geared toward diversifying the Giant and inspire more African American students to pursue careers as engineers.
After a successful first run, Google now plans to continue the program with 100 students this fall. In the first round there were 26 students, 14 of those 24 applied for internships but only 4 received offers.
The program has been met with rave reviews and folks are saying that the program is either rather competitive or a good marketing idea. Either way, this program is giving opportunities to a new set of students. Let’s hope to see more from Google and other companies that lack diversity.
