The actress that created waves after her performance in 12 years a slave, is set to release a children’s book that will directly address the discrimination faced by those with darker skin tones.

The title of the book Sulwe which stands for “star” in Lupita’s native language. The book will target children between the ages of 5 and 7. However, I am sure that all ages will be able to resonate with the message.

The main character Sulwe is a 5-year-old who is the darkest in her family. She sets out in Lupita’s own words “on a starry-eyed adventure, and awakens with a reimagined sense of beauty. She encounters lessons that we learn as children and spend our lives unlearning. This is a story for little ones, but no matter the age I hope it serves as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their own skin.”

Sulwe according to The Times has a hard time dealing with her skin tone and makes her highly focused on changing her color which leads her on a journey that helps her realize the beauty and magic her dark skin. The book is said to be loosely based on the actor’s own struggle with self-image. She has sand been very open about colorism and how grateful she is to be inspiring a new group of young girls who can know embrace the skin they are in.
