Tonya Harvey a transgender woman was Fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in Buffalo, New York. Harvey is the third reported transgendered woman to be killed this year.
Tonya Harvey was 35 at the time of her death. Harvey, who was known by family and friends as Kita was shot around 5:30 pm on Shepard Street and declared dead at the scene. Originally police identified Harvey as male but later corrected her gender.
This is being investigated as a possible hate crime. The Erie County District Attorney’s Office is becoming increasingly concerned as the number of assaults and death of transgendered women is increasing. It is reported that in 2017 there were at least 26 transgendered people killed, most of which were trans women of color. In addition to those staging numbers, 1 in 4 transgender people have been victims of hate biased assaults and again the number is higher for transgendered people of color. Trans people only make up 6 percent of the population in the United States but according to statistics, they have an immensely higher rate of fatal violence.
GLADD https://www.glaad.org has been keeping a close eye on the number of deaths. In addition to Harvey GlADD reports 42-year-old Christa Leigh Steele-Knudslien, killed on Jan. 5 in Massachusetts, and Viccky Gutierrez, killed on Jan. 10 in Los Angeles.
These deaths are alarming and frightened “The hatred, the bigotry and the aggressive attacks on trans people is almost an everyday occurrence in our lives,” Ari Moore a transgender advocate told the Buffalo News
